A GOOD MOVE
Living in beauty while the world
inevitably changes around us.
By Linda Durnell
A “good move” usually signifies a change in direction toward something positive. It’s always a good move to embrace change. In autumn, we move toward cooler temperatures previously only enjoyed in the evenings of summer. We see changes in our yards, as our homes are suddenly more exposed and leaves are on the ground. On our way to work, the streets look larger without the fullness of the trees. In fall, our attitude typically changes to incorporate a move toward one another. This is an intimate season. Some of us spend these autumn days moving into new homes, and others have the challenge of moving to a new state. Although this dramatic change of direction is difficult, it offers freedom and a new beginning. I know a couple in their 30s who is moving into a much larger home, and the ex-
citement to live in a home where they need so much leaves them breathless with anticipation. They are moving toward their future lifestyle, and they are able to envision it long before anything is purchased. For them, this is a time to create, and creating permanence is a good move. My friends in their 50s and 60s are moving toward simplicity and greater ease in their lives. Some say it is a good move to let go and give oneself breathing room. Some people desire to downsize, and give the beloved treasures they have collected during their lives either as wedding presents to their children who are just starting out or to those who are college-
bound. Others are downsizing their primary home and buying a second that offers a change from the routine. Oftentimes this second home becomes a respite for their now grown children. This second home is shared with their closest friends who also find themselves with more time and freedom. Within this home you will see a collection of shells, rocks, and walking sticks that were found along trails. Adorning the walls are the precious pictures of the people closest to them, and next to them, will be original art collected from an upscale gallery. Some of my friends may have downsized and simplified their homes, but their lives are still rich, varied, and full. This is a change that feels good. The desire to create something that defines who we are remains strong, regardless of age. Using your imagination as your guide, it is satisfying to collect original art and antiques, or build a home, garden, or business. To value and admire what you have created is reason enough to continue through the hardships that any worthwhile project is bound to have. When bringing beauty to life, the creative process could not be more personal. At my contemporary art gallery, I see people “light up” while viewing a piece of art that moves them in a profound way. This becomes such an individual and personal moment that I feel like an intruder as I watch. As a frequent witness to the power of beauty, I am perpetually in awe of it. With all the changes people inevitably traverse, some things remain constant, such as the desire to be surrounded by beauty, to feel good, to create something that will live long after we depart, and to surround ourselves with loved ones. And, in my experience, any move toward living in beauty while the world inevitably changes around us, is a good one.
