Larry McLaughlin

I feel that my art is guided by an inner mystical force that translates into an outer solid through my sculpture. With sculpture I put an actual solid into a space and the atmosphere, depending on the piece, can be transformed. Be it sensual, jovial, sinister or spiritual it creates energy and this energy can be perceived in different ways depending on the observer and their ability to share my communicative purpose.

Nature and environment play a large part in my creations and the organic, engendered figures relocate to visions of a natural world. I want my forms to feel compatible to their environment; to be played with, not looked at as a "finished composition". My intention is not to be nature specific, or psychologically centered, neither to decorate, nor project a political or social statement. I look for the essential nature of man - through a vigorous natural force that evokes movement, tension and sensuality. Nothing should limit or dominate the work.

I start my work with models, usually through the medium of monotype, which enables me to envision a free form with the necessity of urgency. This allows an immediate expression with possible (un)conscious social/sexual connections.
